Are you afraid of your own shadow?

Halloween has always invited us to confront our fears, but what about the fears that live within us? The ones we hide, perhaps unknowingly, under layers of adaptation and self-protection? This Halloween, let’s bring light to these shadow parts, understanding that even our deepest fears can become powerful allies.

EXPLORING THE SHADOW

Do you fear or hide from parts of yourself that make you feel uncomfortable—perhaps ashamed, insecure, judgmental, angry? When we examine these shadow parts, we often find that they are simply responses we developed in childhood to adapt and survive.

WHERE DOES IT COME FROM?

In childhood, we instinctively develop ways to adapt to difficult situations and emotions—by hiding parts of ourselves, avoiding our own pain, or creating 'protective parts' that shield us. These parts have their own fears, doubts and needs that were never fully understood. As adults, these shadows often linger in our behaviours, thoughts and feelings becoming the parts we wish weren’t there or didn’t know existed. These ‘shadow parts’ may hold our fear, anger or shame—emotions that once protected us but now keep us in cycles of avoidance and survival. The Halloween theme reminds us that while we may try to bury or mask these parts, they remain, calling out to be seen and healed.

WHY CAN’T THEY STAY BURIED?

The shadows within us contain old wounds, fears and beliefs that remain frozen in time. We might fear or resent them because they bring up the pain we tried to avoid for years. But when we bury these parts, they grow stronger, showing up in our lives in ways we don’t expect - keeping us stuck in patterns, drawing us into the same experiences, or creating a sense that we’re incomplete.

TRANSFORM FEAR INTO COMPASSION

Imagine offering your shadow parts what they needed long ago: kindness, understanding, love, permission to be themselves, compassion... When we allow space for our shadows, we start to understand the roles they’ve played in our lives. They transform from demons into allies, giving us clarity and resilience we might never have realised was within us.

STEPPING INTO THE LIGHT

True transformation begins when we invite all of ourselves into the light. As we embrace our shadows, the parts we thought were weaknesses reveal themselves as sources of wisdom. We become whole, no longer fragmented but empowered. In this wholeness, we discover a profound release, a freedom to experience all of life’s beauty and richness. We step into the light and it can be liberating, with fierce clarity.

As a Life & Career Coach and a Developmental Trauma Therapist I have spent years supporting people stuck on the same loop for years. Coaching helps us move forward with clarity and confidence, but sometimes we need to examine the blind spots that exist in our adaptive and shadow parts before we can see things clearly. That's where the shadow work comes in - we explore the deeper yearnings overshadowed by how we creatively adjusted as children to survive and cope in our environments.
